March 2006
One of the principles at the heart of BT's 21st Century transformation programme is transparency and openness. Over the last two years, we have learnt a number of important lessons in the deployment of a next generation network. To make it carrier class, be open and transparent, be fast, don't start until you can do it everywhere, focus on cycle times and be global.

Consult21 has ten Working Groups each focusing in on a different business area to ensure that 21CN topics and issues can be reviewed, discussed in finer detail and resolved faster. Find out more in the first of a series of profiles on the Working Groups.
BT has concluded negotiations and signed contracts with the remaining four preferred suppliers for 21st Century Network (21CN). Contracts have been signed with Alcatel, Cisco, Ericsson and Fujitsu. This follows the announcement in late December 2005 that contracts had been signed with Ciena, Huawei, Lucent and Siemens.
As part of the preparation for migration to 21CN it is important that any issues with Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) are isolated and resolved. To help achieve this BT is engaging with stakeholders on a CPE testing programme.
As BT embarks on 21CN, BT considers the use of common standards by network operators and equipment suppliers around the world as being more important than ever.
As General Manager for the 21st Century Network (21CN) Programme Ian Stirrat runs the programme office which brings the elements of 21CN together from across the parts of BT. Here Ian shares with Consult21 News his vision for what he says is the most important long term change BT has ever undertaken.
Absolutely key to the success of BT’s 21st Century Network is to create a reliable, resilient, secure network in which all communications providers and their customers can have confidence.
