‘Key Lessons for Convergence’ - Paul Reynolds Speaks at ECTA Spring Conference
Paul Reynold’s CEO BT Wholesale recently addressed the European Competitive Telecommunications Association (ECTA) Spring Conference. The theme for the conference, held in Barcelona was ‘Where broadband and broadcast come together’.
Speaking at the conference Paul Reynolds outlined the key lessons BT had learnt so far in moving towards a converged world. “Convergence is something that we’ve talked about as an industry for a number of years. But today, convergence is real and it’s becoming increasingly critical for all service providers, wherever they are in the world. But it’s not just about the convergence of broadband and broadcasting, but the convergence of wireless and wireline services, of IT and communications. True convergence is multi-dimensional which sounds complicated but convergence is actually about simplicity, about eliminating complexity in the service we provide for people.
Convergence is about making people’s lives easier by eliminating the distinction between voice and data and is a major driver behind carriers migrating to all IP.
Three years ago, BT set out a strategy on the basis that convergence would characterise our industry. Call it luck, or call it inspired judgement, but the strategy BT set out three years ago looks increasingly relevant with each passing day.
But if convergence was at the heart of BT’s vision three years ago, it’s at the heart of our business today. But BT recognised that to deliver convergence effectively and cost-efficiently, we needed a new underlying infrastructure and systems capability, not one born of legacy and the 20th century. Today, 21CN is widely recognised as the most radical, ambitious and far reaching next generation transformation programme in the industry worldwide.”
